Utah Land Sailing

Land sailing or land yachting is named this because the vehicle or wheeled yacht is powered over the land by a sail.  The materials are lightweight, strong and durable such as polyester, fiberglass, and light metal.

Land sailing is an offshoot of water and sea sailing and kayaking.  If the wind can push kayaks over calm or rough seas, then sailing over flat terrain and on desert sands would be no different.  The equipment will just have to be suited for the conditions prevailing.

Buying a gift voucher for a friend or for you is a sure way to get started in this hobby.  Aside from some conditions like age, weight, and a little agility, there is not much to prevent anyone from getting into these sail crafts. What makes it even more attractive is that no previous land sailing experience is necessary.  The club, resort or the land sailing organizer will train the beginner.

Anybody can do land sailing.  Club rules usually state that he or she must be at least 16 years old, less than 200 kilograms, and reasonably agile.

To get involved in land sailing, if you’re a beginner then you have to enroll in lessons first.  There is a half day course that includes maneuvers and safe controlled turnings or a full day experience of graceful sailing.  There is also a family fun adventure that offers group land sailing lessons.  These are truly fun activities for each member of the family. It is very much advised to go try it out first on a half day or full day adventure.

You have to have your own land yacht if you plan to pursue this as a serious hobby. You can purchace some kites and accessories at my Online Store  and you can buy second hand,  or build a cart yourself.  Professionals advise against building your own land yacht because the quality might be sacrificed.  When you’re sailing at more than 50 miles per hours you don’t want your or your family’s safety to be compromised.

The accessories to go are helmet, eye wear, gloves, kneepads, elbow pads and shin pads. Other costs involved are club memberships, insurance, and if you’re enjoying it, the payments for advanced courses.

In the U.S.A, you have the South West Land sailing, Colorado Land sailing and Ice boating, and the Sirocco Land Sailor Association. In the U.K. you may join the British Federation of Sand and Yacht Clubs or the Wirral Sand Yacht Club.

The Utah desert and the Great Salt Lakes are great for land sailing with their wide expanse of flat terrain and sand. If you have taste for a little history then go sand yachting in Utah Beach, Normandy.  It is near the D-Day landing beach in World War II.
