Trout Aquariums

If you decide to keep a trout instead of a toy fish,  the first thing you might want to think about is the number of fish you'd like to keep in your aquarium. This will determine the size of the tank you need to purchase.  The bigger the aquarium the better it is for your fish. This is because greater water volume dilutes toxin concentration. Also, a larger aquarium allows a variety of fish to cohabitate with each other peacefully. Consider how big or small a certain trout could grow. Depending on the various types of trout, the average size of a rainbow trout is about 12 to 18 in depending on where you are. You will also need enough space for routine clean-ups and maintenance.

Trout are a freshwater fish that belongs to the salmon family. They are usually found in cool, clear streams and lakes. There are a number of species that varies in shapes, sizes, colors, and environmental needs.  Three of the most common are the Rainbow trout, the Brown trout, the Brook trout.

Every trout specie has its own basic needs. For example, rainbow trout prefer cool water with plenty of oxygen. In its natural setting, if the surface temperature rises to 70 degrees, rainbows will swim deeper into cooler water with enough oxygen. The optimal temperature for trout’s is from 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit,  with pH levels as low as 4.1 and as high as 9.5. So it's ideal to place your aquarium where there's shade and in room temperature controlled.  Keeping the aquarium temperature is a must, if unbalanced, it will affect their living conditions and eventually the fish's health. Do not place the aquarium in direct sunlight. This will only encourage an aggressive algae growth.  A chiller can be used to controll the temperature of the water.  Check out our Online Store for a great selection of Aquarium Chillers!

These then should be taken into mind when arranging the aquarium and its aqua scaping, referring to the arrangement of water plants. Trout vary in color depending on its surroundings to form a sort of camouflage whenever they move from one habitat to another. So when you place your trout inside the aquarium, don't be surprised if it changes colors and patterns.

Since there are different types of trout, each has a specific living condition. Trout that have lived in lakes base their diet on the aquatic life forms abundant in lakes. They take shade under the plants that grow on the surface of the water where they also get the insects that live in the plants. The typical lake bed is made up of pebbles and gravel mixed in slabs and boulders. This then becomes a hint on how to emulate the trout's original setting and transform your aquarium into it. Trout’s use gravel for spawning so a gravel area in your aquarium would be good to keep in mind.

Some types of trout such as the brown trout also have unique characteristics
. The brown trout does not seem to move and stays at the bottom of your aquarium just watching. You might also find them disinterested with food. They are extremely cautious and wary.  Responsible treatment of the trout means having the knowledge on the type of trout you want to keep.
