Kite Surfing

Kite surfing is one of the newest sports to develop from wakeboarding and paragliding.  Using a kite to pull and lift the kite surfer, the feet of the surfer are strapped to the kite board.  See our Online Store for great deals on kites!

An inflatable or traction kite should be easy to launch especially on water when spills occur.   It should also be a high powered, high performance kite to allow high jumps and quick sailing.  You can also practice launching and controlling your kite while still on the land by holding onto the control bars and trying different angles at the edge of the wind window.

Launch your kite while still on the shore, holding firmly to the handle.  When the lines are taught, step onto the board and put your feet inside the straps. Then give yourself a push toward the water.  When kite surfing for the first couple times try having an assistant launch the kite from the shallow end of the water expedites the procedure.

Control wile kite surfing is fairly simple too.
Pulling on the right side of the control bar turns the kite to the right and pulling the bar toward the left turns it to the left. To perform a jump, make sure that you’re constantly surfing at high speed.  Reel in your kite and lift your board upward.  Bend your knees and when you feel the power of the kite lifting you, extend your knees.  This should lift you up.

After learning how to jump with a kite board, landing smoothly is a nice way to go on enjoying the wind sea and your kite surfing experience.  At this point the kite should be going up vertically, instead of going straight horizontally, to allow your soft impact on the water. Your board should be pointing a bit downwind. Extend your legs then bend them when the board makes contact with the water to absorb some of the shock.

A bidirectional board is more conducive to kite surfing.  When jumping or doing other highly skilled actions, because the front and rear ends are the same, there is no need to shift the board.

The board may be attached by a leash to the surfer’s foot.  And because they are bidirectional, beginners can immediately use them to go upwind.

An important thing not to be overlooked wile kite surfing is there should be a safety release system.  It is designed to disable the kite quickly in dangerous situations.  After which, the kite should be retrieved relatively ease.

Kite surfing competitions have different categories for professional and amateur men, women, and juniors.  Every October, a kite surfing competition takes place in Maui, Hawaii.  Many surfers representing different countries join in this major event.  The West Australian Kite surfing Association also holds a Kite cross competition and Kite stock 2008 now on its third year.
