ALL ABOUT FRESHWATER AQUARIUMS
Freshwater aquariums are known for their low cost and easier maintenance.
Freshwater aquariums are an aquatic receptacle that keeps freshwater aquatic organisms, plants and animals for display, research or pet-keeping purposes. Its inhabitants vary from cold water to tropical specimens. (See our full line of chillers)
This contained environment is housed within a transparent glass made up of acrylic material that closely resembles the natural environment of its inhabitants.
In the earlier days of freshwater aquariums, they were heated by an open flame which was obviously dangerous and faulty way of warming up the aquarium. The filters were also expensive, large and noisy. Also, the information was also scarce regarding what kind of fish to buy and at what temperatures the fish are supposed to be kept. Modern technology made fish keeping an easier hobby.
How do you set up a freshwater aquarium?
You will need gravel, driftwood, backcloth or any decorative background, heater, any suitable hood that will serve as a cover, rocks, live or synthetic plants, an aquarium stand base, air pumps, filtration system, rocks, siphon hose, fish food, fish net, thermometer, water conditioner, water quality testing kit, and air stones.
First, you need to set up the tank by cleaning it using a non-soap based product. Then, choose an appropriate location for your freshwater aquarium.
Second, by following the manufacturer's instructions to the letter, install the filtration system. Then, add gravel, 1 pound per gallon of freshwater.
Third, place the plans by anchoring the bottoms in the gravel.
Fourth, fill your tank with water making sure that you leave an inch at the top of the acrylic glass. Make sure that you use water conditioners that are suitable for your fish. Do not forget to put the hood on once you are done. You would not want a cat gobbling on your fish.
Fifth, try out your filters to make sure they are in good working condition. If it is working, add the heater and the thermometer. Research on what temperature your fish will thrive best in. Allow at least 24 hours to get everything moving to get the temperature settings right and to get the water moving. Once you get healthy algae growing, choose an algae eater.
If you are certain that the chemical levels and the tank temperature are alright put your fish in.
Take into consideration the surface area and the height in setting up and maintaining the aquarium. Bigger and larger aquariums provides a more stable water-world, enhances its aesthetic view and it is more beneficial to taller aquatic organisms. It can hold a larger number of fish.
It is recommended that you use an all glass aquarium. Not only is it scratch resistant, but it less likely to suffer from discoloration.
As to where to place your aquarium, remember to place them near electrical outlets and away from windows to avoid over exposure to the sun. This can alter the aquariums temperature and will jeopardize the aquatic environment because fluctuating temperatures are harmful to the fish. There are fish that are accustomed to cold water which do not need heating apparatus while tropical fish require a certain temperature be maintained at a certain level. Also, make sure that the fish you will be placing in your aquarium are compatible with each other.
Now that you have the information that you need regarding freshwater aquariums and to set it up, you are guaranteed to enjoy fish keeping to its maximum levels.
